IOWA CITY - Gameday arrests and citations doubled during this past weekend's matchup with Iowa State compared to the Sept. 6 contest with Ball State, according to University of Iowa statistics.
According to the UI Department of Public Safety, UI officers made 20 arrests on Saturday and wrote 20 citations. During the Ball State game, officers wrote 10 citations and made 10 arrests.
Among Saturday's arrests, 19 were for public intoxication, although some people had other offenses such as interference with official acts or disorderly conduct.
Jeffrey P. Happel, 50, of Cedar Rapids wasn't arrested for public intoxication, but did earn a second-degree criminal mischief charge at 12:57 p.m. Saturday after he allegedly dumped a beer on the keyboard of a laptop after asking another tailgating party to turn their music down.
Fans inside Kinnick Stadium pointed out 19-year-old Aaron M. Kempf, of Olds, as being intoxicated. Police said Kempf was sitting in the wrong seat, covered in mud and admitted to drinking, not knowing where he was and falling in a creek. He refused a breath test and was arrested for public intoxication.
Ryan K. Sempf, 19, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested for public intoxication after a woman reported Sempf called her a name and slapped her sunglasses off her face. While she didn't want to file a report on the assault, police said Sempf had a .181 blood alcohol content.
Shane A. Smith got the attention of officers after multiple fans reported Smith was groping women in the stands and being drunk. He was asked to leave and refused, but was arrested for public intoxication.
Of the 20 arrests, five were signed out of the holding cell at Kinnick Stadium, 13 were transported from the holding cell to the Johnson County Jail and two were taken directly to jail.
Police wrote eight citations for possession of alcohol under the legal age and 12 for open container.
