Sep. 29, 2014 10:28 am
IOWA CITY - An Illinois man is accused of spray painting vehicles and trash bins Saturday night.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, shortly before midnight Saturday an off-duty Iowa City police officer spotted a man - later identified as Brian J. Maigler - spray painting trash bins in the alley in the 400 block of South Johnson Street. The off-duty officer also saw Maigler spray painting three vehicles.
On duty officers responded and Maigler ran, police said.
When police caught Maigler, he said he ran because he was 'ashamed of what he had done,” according to the criminal complaint. Maigler allegedly told police he spray painted the vehicles because he had been harassed by people near them. He smelled strongly of alcohol and admitted to drinking two alcoholic beverages, police said. A post arrest breath test showed Maigler's blood alcohol content to be .215 percent at 12:21 a.m. Sunday.
Police said the damage to the vehicles and trash bins was estimated at $10,000.
Maigler was arrested and faces charged of second-degree criminal mischief, public intoxication and interference with official acts.
