CEDAR RAPIDS – A Cedar Rapids man wanted in connection with a shooting from six months ago has been arrested in Illinois, the U.S. Marshals said.
According to the Marshals Service, 28-year-old Cordarryl Smith was arrested Monday morning in Streator, Ill. He awaits extradition back to Linn County where he will face a charge of attempted murder.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said police responded to a report of shots fired around 3 p.m. on Sept. 5 in the area of Fourth Avenue and 15th Street SE. There, officers found a 38-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police said the victim was shot with a handgun on the front porch of 1532 Fourth Ave. SE.
Authorities eventually identified Smith as the shooter and contacted the marshals for assistance in tracking him down. Their search brought the marshals to a residence in Streator, authorities said.
Smith was identified leaving the home Monday morning and tried to evade capture in a vehicle and by foot. However, he was finally taken into custody 16 miles away in Ottawa, Ill.
Smith is in custody in the LaSalle County Jail until his return to Iowa.
