Man rescued from burning Cedar Rapids apartment

CEDAR RAPIDS - Firefighters rescued a man from a burning apartment building Monday morning.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said the Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to 222 Jacolyn Dr. SW at 9:16 a.m. after a man in one of the building's units called 911 and reported he was trapped inside. Another caller reported seeing flames coming from the building.
Fire was found in a common entryway and a porch area of the building, Buelow said. All three affected units - including the man was in - were located on the second floor. The man's only possible means of escape before being rescued was out of a second-floor window, Buelow said.
Buelow said firefighters were able to get the man out of the apartment after knocking down flames on a deck area. The man was able to walk out, but had suffered injuries - including possible smoke inhalation - considered to be non-life threatening.
Three apartment units were affected by the fire and another three to four units sustained water damage, Buelow said. Investigation is ongoing.
