Cedar Rapids police and fire respond to two morning crashes

CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids police and fire responded to two crashes early Tuesday morning.
First responders were called to the 4600 block of Bowling Street SW at 1:22 a.m. for a crash involving a car and a train. Authorities said the car was southbound on Bowling Street when it collided with the train on the CRANDIC rail line. The 67-year-old driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was cited for a railroad crossing violation, according to police. A 23-year-old passenger in the vehicle was not injured, authorities said.
Police and fire officials responded to another crash around 2:30 a.m. in the 4400 block of First Avenue SW. Authorities said a 2016 Jeep Patriot hit a tree. The 34-year-old female driver and 52-year-old male passenger both had to be extricated from the vehicle by the fire department. Authorities said both occupants suffered serious injuries and were taken via ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The crash remains under investigation.
