CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man will spend more than six years in federal prison for a weapons offense.
Treshawn Smith, 19, was sentenced Monday to 81 months in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa. He pleaded guilty in August to one count of being an unlawful drug user in possession of a firearm.
As part of his plea agreement, Smith admitted to being an unlawful user of marijuana.
Authorities said Cedar Rapids police saw Smith toss a loaded .38-caliber handgun on July 10 when they encountered him in southwest Cedar Rapids. Smith admitted to handling the gun, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
At a sentencing hearing Thursday, evidence was presented that showed Smith used another handgun to rob a pizza delivery driver. When the driver and another person attempted to follow him, he shot at them, authorities said.
In addition to his prison term, Smith will serve a three-year supervised release after completing his prison term.
