Clear Creek Amana student stands accused of kidnapping at school

Mar. 15, 2016 10:21 pm
TIFFIN - The Iowa City man accused of kidnapping and attempting to sexually assault a Clear Creek Amana High School student was a student himself, according to Superintendent Tim Kuehl.
The attack occurred around 4:40 p.m. Thursday, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Kuehl said both Zachary C. Gibbs, 18, and the victim were participating in after-school activities. The victim was a juvenile female.
Typically, students who stay after school are in a group setting with a supervisor, Kuehl said.
According to police, Gibbs found the victim in a commons area of the school.
Authorities said Gibbs took the girl against her will to a secluded area of the school and began to kiss and touch her against her will.
Police said the victim tried to free herself from Gibbs and told him 'no” while the attack occurred.
'We're reviewing how we manage the building after school and find ways to better ensure the safety of everyone involved,” Kuehl said.
Gibbs has been arrested and faces charges of third-degree kidnapping, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.
