CEDAR RAPIDS — A man wanted for manslaughter out of Indiana was arrested in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday.
According to the U.S. Marshals' Office, 18-year-old Diamonty Newman was wanted in connection with a deadly assault that occurred in southern Indiana on Sept. 11. Authorities said a 44-year-old man was 'severely assaulted' and died from his injuries.
After Indiana authorities identified Newman as a suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest, the U.S. Marshals Service Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force was requested to join the search for him. Law enforcement in Indiana and Iowa helped track Newman down to an apartment complex near the 1900 block of Buckingham Drive NW in Cedar Rapids. After hours of surveillance, marshals and Cedar Rapids police officers saw Newman leave the complex and get into a vehicle. He was then taken into custody without incident, according to the marshals.
Newman remains in custody in the Linn County Jail where he awaits extradition back to Indiana on the manslaughter charge.
