WASHINGTON - A Washington woman succumbed to injuries she suffered when she was hit by a car last month.
Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig said 51-year-old Katherine. A. Whetstine was running on County Road W38 just north of Highway 22 in Wellman around 5:09 a.m. June 17 when she was hit by a car. Whetstine was hospitalized at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and died from her injuries on July 10.
Ludwig said the circumstances of the fatal crash are still under investigation. The driver has been identified and is cooperating with authorities, Ludwig said. Any charges would be decided by the Washington County Attorney's Office.
According to her obituary, Whetstine was a 'proud, active and energetic person” who was training for her second marathon at the time of the fatal collision.
