IOWA CITY - Kenneth Johns is scheduled to be arraigned next month.
According to court documents, Johns' arraignment has been set for April 10. On March 27, Johns was formally charged with second-degree kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a felon and carrying weapons. Johns, 48, is accused of abducting his stepdaughter from a residence in Solon on March 7.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to the Casey's General Store in Solon after Johns' wife called to report a domestic abuse incident involving him. At the time, he was wanted on a warrant for a prior domestic incident.
Authorities said Johns fled Solon in a vehicle, and later that day, after learning Johns might be in possession of a weapon, authorities issued an Amber Alert. The stepdaughter was turned over to authorities by a third party in West Branch early on March 8 and Johns was arrested in Davenport after a standoff with police later that day.
Witnesses listed in the trial information include Johns' stepdaughter and wife, law enforcement and a number of people who transported Johns or his stepdaughter during the Amber Alert.
While authorities have said Johns had help getting from Solon to Muscatine and from Muscatine to Solon, Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said on Monday his detectives were not pursuing charges against any potential accomplices in the case.
'I'm not sure they were all aware of the whole situation until it was said and done,” he said. 'Then they realized the gravity of it all.”
Johns faces more than 30 years in prison if convicted.
