IOWA CITY - A North Liberty man is accused of assaulting a woman and her dog and taking her car.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, officers took a report of an assault that occurred around 2:30 a.m. March 22. Police said 23-year-old Anthony M. Hutchinson got into an argument with a woman at a residence in Iowa City. During the argument, Hutchinson allegedly smashed the woman's iPhone, broke her DVD player and damaged a small table when he threw it against a wall.
At some point, Hutchinson hit the woman's dog, then hit her in the arm, causing her pain and discomfort, police said.
Police said the woman offered to drive Hutchinson home. During their drive, Hutchinson attempted to put the car in park while in motion and also punched the passenger window, causing it to crack, police said.
Hutchinson allegedly grabbed the keys out of the ignition, took off on foot and later came back to the car and drove away without the woman's permission.
Hutchinson was arrested Thursday morning and faces charges of third-degree criminal mischief, operating a vehicle without the owner's consent, domestic assault and obstruction of emergency communications.
