CEDAR RAPIDS - A fire at College Community Schools sent a firefighter to the hospital for evaluation Wednesday morning.
City public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said firefighters were called to College Community Schools around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday for a fire at a two-story concession stand-storage building located at the school's baseball and softball field.
Buelow said when firefighters arrived, the fire was mostly out and appeared to be concentrated around the first floor bathroom of the concession stand. He said when a firefighter was doing a search on the second floor - which is used by the announcer and for storage - the firefighter fell about 12 feet through the floor.
The firefighter was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries, Buelow said.
The cause of the fire appears to be failure of equipment or heat source, Buelow said. Investigators are looking at whether heat tape around pipes in the first floor bathroom failed, leading to the fire.
