Police: Fleeing Ohio woman hit police car, van with children inside

Jun. 5, 2015 11:39 am
CORALVILLE - A crash in Coralville on Thursday started with a chase in Wilton and ended with charges for an Ohio woman.
According to Iowa State Patrol criminal complaints, 36-year-old Jammie V. Castillo, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, has been charged with driving under the influence and eluding after leading police on a high-speed chase that ended with her crashing into a minivan.
Troopers said Wilton Police Chief Tim Leathers attempted to stop a car driven by Castillo around 10:50 a.m. Thursday after she harassed a city work crew in Wilton. Witnesses reported that Castillo was acting strangely and could be under the influence of drugs, police said.
Castillo fled from Leathers, who was driving a full-marked squad car. Police said the pursuit reached 100 mph on Interstate 80. Castillo is accused of hitting Leathers' patrol car with her own while continuing to evade multiple squad cars from multiple law enforcement agencies. A plane was used to track the chase, the state patrol said Thursday.
The chase ended when Castillo exited the interstate at Highway 965 in Coralville and hit a minivan occupied by an adult and three children. The state patrol reported the minivan occupants were sent to the hospital after complaining of pain.
Police said Castillo attempted to flee on foot, but was taken into custody by officers.
Castillo exhibited a 'wide range of mood swings,” and appeared to be under the influence of drugs, police said. She was taken to the Coralville Police Department and consented to an exam from a drug recognition expert who determined she was under the influence of an illegal drug.
