Weapons charge dropped against Cedar Rapids man

Charges have been dropped against a Cedar Rapids man arrested after police were investigating a shooting Sunday evening.
Assistant Linn County Attorney Nicholas Scott said Alivonta Taylor, 24, was originally charged with carrying weapons because police believed his permit to carry a firearm was suspended. However, officials learned that a no contact order against Turner had been dropped and his carry permit was valid.
'Essentially, that's why the carrying weapons charge was dropped,” he said.
Turner, 26-year-old Fabian Taylor and two other people were in a car that was stopped after police were investigating a shooting in the 300 block of 16th Street SE just before 5 p.m. Sunday. Taylor was arrested on a charge of providing false information to law enforcement and an outstanding warrant, police said. According to online court records, Taylor pleaded guilty earlier this week to providing false information and was fined $250.
No charges were filed against the men in connection with the shooting, which is still under investigation.
