Malnourished horses recovered from Fayette County property

Oct. 10, 2014 2:36 pm
ARLINGTON - A Fayette County couple faces animal neglect charges after malnourished horses were found on their property.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies executed a search warrant at the Arlington home of Duane J. Landis and Margaret A. Landis on Thursday after receiving a tip about possible animal neglect at the residence. During a search of the residence, aided by a local veterinarian, authorities found five horses that were thin and malnourished.
Police said four of the horses belonged to the Landises and the fifth belonged to a family member who does not live at the property. The couple gave up custody of their four horses and the fifth was returned to its original owner, according to the sheriff's office.
In addition to the horses, authorities also located an unspecified number of animal carcasses on the property. The Landises now face charges of animal neglect and failure to dispose of dead bodies. The investigation continues, authorities said.
