Iowa City man faces weapons charges

IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man is accused of bringing a revolver and other weapons to work.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, on Aug. 19, 23-year-old Luis J. Ramirez-Hernandez brought a revolver - described by one co-worker as a loaded .357 - to work with him in North Liberty. His employer is not identified in the criminal complaints. Police said Ramirez-Hernandez also brought a BB gun and a stun gun with him to work that day.

One of Ramirez-Hernandez's co-workers reported the man stuck the barrel of the gun in the other man's leg and told him to touch it, police said. A co-worker also reported Ramirez-Hernandez triggered the stun gun in front of him, stuck the barrel of the revolver in his ribs and asked him how it felt. Both co-workers reported feeling scared and threatened by Ramirez-Hernandez' actions.

Police said Ramirez-Hernandez was convicted of domestic assault in Muscatine County in 2012, making him ineligible to possess a weapon. He told police he got the gun from his 'homie.”

Ramirez-Hernandez was arrested in Iowa City on Wednesday after he was spotted by a plain clothes officer who knew his license to be barred. He was arrested and faces charges of dominion of a firearm by someone convicted of domestic abuse, a Class D felony; carrying weapons, first-degree harassment, two counts of assault while displaying a weapon and driving while barred, all aggravated misdemeanors; and second-degree harassment, a serious misdemeanor.
