Sep. 8, 2014 11:37 am
CEDAR RAPIDS - Police said a Cedar Rapids man had pot and a stolen outboard motor in his car when he was pulled over.
According to Iowa City Police Department criminal complaints, 19-year-old Jake L.J. Dickinson was stopped at the 96 mile marker on northbound Highway 218 at 9:27 p.m. Sunday after he was observed doing 80 mph ins a 65 mph zone. The officer who stopped Dickinson said he could smell marijuana come from the vehicle and Dickinson admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day.
Police searched Dickinson's vehicle and found a gram of marijuana and a pipe in a bag in the back seat of the vehicle. Dickinson said the pot and pipe belonged to him and not the passengers in his vehicle, police said.
In addition to the marijuana, police said they found a Mercury four-stroke outboard motor in Dickinson's vehicle. Police ran the serial number on the motor and it came back as being reported stolen from Cedar Rapids. Dickinson allegedly told officers he received the motor for free from a friend of a friend and did not know where it came from.
Dickinson had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of marijuana, police said. He consented to field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test, which showed he had not consumed any alcohol recently. However, an evaluation from a Drug Recognition Expert determined that Dickinson was under the influence of marijuana and unable to safely operate the vehicle.
Dickinson was arrested and faces charges of second-degree theft, operating under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
