Dec. 3, 2014 7:57 am
IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man is accused of causing a disturbance on the University of Iowa campus and assaulting two UI police officers.
According to UI Department of Public Safety criminal complaints, officers responded to the main campus around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a man who was harassing people and disrupting classes at Van Allen Hall, the Pappajohn Business Building and Macbride Hall.
The subject, 20-year-old Dequan E. Miles, was found on the Pentacrest near Schaefer Hall. Police said Miles had been given a trespass warning for all university property, and he was placed under arrest for violating that warning.
Police said Miles resisted arrest and after he was handcuffed and placed against a tree, he kicked backward and struck an officer, causing him severe pain and discomfort. Miles stomped down on another officer's right foot, causing that officer pain and discomfort.
Miles was taken into custody and now faces two counts of assault causing injury to a peace officer, an aggravated misdemeanor; interference with official acts causing serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor; and trespass, a simple misdemeanor. An aggravated misdemeanor is punishable by up to two years in jail. A simple misdemeanor is punishable by up to 30 days in jail. He remains in custody and his bond has not yet been set, according to online jail records.
