Benton County man dies after swerving to avoid hitting deer

BLAIRSTOWN - A Blairstown man has died from injuries he suffered in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday.
According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, 44-year-old Laffite Pierre was southbound on 21st Avenue south of Blairstown around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer. Authorities said Pierre entered the ditch and struck a driveway, causing his vehicle to go airborne.
Pierre was taken to the Marengo Hospital and then transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where authorities said he died Wednesday morning.
