CEDAR RAPIDS — When five police officers were shot and killed in Dallas earlier this month, it marked the deadliest attack on law enforcement since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
The shootings were further evidence of growing tension between the public and law enforcement in the wake of several high-profile officer-involved shootings across the country. But across the nation, the Dallas shootings also have led to an outpouring of support for law enforcement.
Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner said his department has long enjoyed the support of the general public, but admitted this level of recognition is unprecedented during his career.
The sheriff's office has shared examples of that public outreach on their Twitter page in the last month.
Q: What kind of support have you received?
A: We have had an outpouring of support from the public, which is very appreciated by our employees. Anything from folks dropping off baked goods to snacks.
We've actually had companies bring in doughnuts. Someone actually dropped off zucchini bread and zucchini ...
. Just things to let us know they care about us and support us. In light of everything going on, it is nice to hear from the public.
Q: Have you been surprised by the level of support?
A: I don't know if 'surprised' is the right word. I always assumed the overwhelming majority of the public appreciates us for what we do for them.
It was appreciated, certainly, by the deputies and the employees, that they were recognized.
I have a different contact with the public than my employees do. I have heard all along how the public appreciates what we do, the job that we do for them ...
. It actually means more to the deputies that someone would go out of their way to give recognition.
Q: Have you seen an outpour of support like this in your career?
A: This happens on a semi-frequent basis where a person will respond regarding a single incident. 'I was broke down on the side of the road and the deputy went above and beyond.'
This amount of support is new and it is different.
