CEDAR RAPIDS — A woman was killed in a condominium fire early Thursday morning.
The name of the woman is not being released at this time, pending notification of her family.
According to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, crews were called to a six-unit condominium at 1218 Oakland Road around 2:42 a.m. Thursday for a report of a fire in one of the units. Responding firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the three-story building.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department was already on the scene and had everyone out of the building, except for the occupant of the affected unit, according to the fire department.
Firefighters attacked the exterior fire, which had spread up the outside of the building. Crews entered the affected unit and were met with 'heavy fire, smoke and heat conditions,' according to a media release. The occupant of the unit, an adult female, was removed and transported to St. Luke's Hospital with unknown injuries. Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said Thursday morning the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
One unit sustained fire damage and the other five units have significant smoke damage, Buelow said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
