CEDAR RAPIDS - Two men have been arrested and an AK-47 has been seized in connection with Monday's shooting that left one man injured.
According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Linn County Attorney's Office, 25-year-old Rashad Hull of Hiawatha and 28-year-old Carnell T. Hughes of Cedar Rapids have been charged with attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and going armed with intent. Hull was also wanted out of Illinois for a parole violation warrant.
Additional suspects could be charged in the investigation, police said.
Cedar Rapids police responded to the 1200 block of Third Avenue SE, near the Westminster Presbyterian Church, around 12:35 p.m. Monday after officers heard shots fired. The police department also took multiple reports of shots fired.
Responding officers found a shooting victim in the parking lot. He was taken from the scene in an ambulance to be treated for non life-threatening injuries, police said.
According to a Linn County Attorney's Office criminal complaint against Hull, Monday's shooting involved a 'volley of gunfire,” with several rounds hitting and penetrating a nearby apartment.
Police have said the shooting was not random and that the victim was targeted; however, a motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.
'It does not appear to be random, we still believe that,” said Greg Buelow, public safety spokesman. 'There was some kind of ongoing dispute ... between several individuals.”
Buelow said investigators are still trying to determine what caused the dispute.
'Some of the individuals involved have not been cooperative,” he said. 'Obviously, that makes it more challenging to try to get to the root cause of what the ongoing dispute is about.”
Police said Hughes turned himself in at the police station Monday night. An AK-47 rifle was seized at that time. Buelow said investigators believe the rifle was used in Monday's shooting.
Attempted murder is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison; intimidation with a dangerous weapon is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison; and going armed with intent is a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
