CORALVILLE - An Illinois man faces life in prison for assaulting a woman and refusing to let her leave to get medical attention.
According to Coralville police criminal complaints, on April 30 around 1 a.m., 32-year-old Derrick A. Ray, of Crestwood, Ill., and the victim - an unidentified woman - were at the Super 7 Motel in Coralville. Police said Ray had taken the woman's cellphone and car keys because he wanted to talk to her about their previous relationship.
The woman reported to police she had gone to the motel to retrieve her belongings and was afraid of Ray due to previous assaults.
Those concerns turned out to be founded as Ray allegedly assaulted the woman in the hotel room. Police said Ray assaulted the woman again when she tried to leave without her belongings.
The woman suffered multiple cuts to her face, a black eye, swelling, bruising and a possibly broken ankle during the assault, police said.
Police said Ray then picked the woman up and put her in the passenger seat of her car. Rather than take her to get medical care, Ray drove the woman around the Coralville area, refusing her requests to go to the hospital, police said. During their drive, Ray hit the woman in the face, causing her to bleed, police said.
Ray finally returned to the motel and took the woman back inside, but refused to give her back her keys or phone until she talked to him for five more minutes, police said. The woman was finally allowed to leave and drive herself to the hospital after she begged Ray to let her go, police said.
Ray has been arrested and faces charges of first-degree kidnapping, a Class A felony; assault causing serious injury, a Class D felony; and assault causing serious injury, a serious misdemeanor.
