IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man faces prison time for refusing to return a rental car.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, 30-year-old Larry D. Jones rented a car from Enterprise through his insurance company after totaling his own vehicle. Police said Jones was supposed to return his rental car on June 26, but failed to do so.
Police said Enterprise made several arrangements with Jones in an attempt to recover the vehicle, but he still did not return the vehicle. During a chance encounter at Wal-Mart on July 22, an Enterprise representative tried to get the car back from Jones. However, police said Jones threatened to harm the man.
Jones disconnected his phone and information listed on his rental agreement is bogus, police said. He was eventually found and arrested. Jones faces one count of first-degree theft, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
