Fire destroys warehouse at Cedar Rapids landfill

CEDAR RAPIDS - A warehouse near the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency was destroyed by fire over night.
According to a news release, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to the 2200 block of A Street SW at 1:08 a.m. Friday for a report of flames coming from the landfill. Responding units encountered heavy smoke and flames showing from one side of the Lang Roofing Company building at 2204 A St. SW.
The fire eventually spread through the roof of the structure, forcing crews to take a defensive approach to fighting the fire. The building sustained structural damage and one side collapsed, according to the fire department.
No one was in the structure at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Engine 1 was moved to the new Cedar Rapids Central Fire Station on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, as crews began responding out of the new station. (Liz Martin/The Gazette)
