A man was injured in a reported explosion that rendered a Cedar Rapids building uninhabitable.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to 1414 Oakland Road NE around 4:22 p.m. Tuesday for a report of an explosion and at least one injured occupant.
According to a department new release, upon their arrival crews found the front and rear walls of one of the building's 16 units 'completely blown out.” The victim had been removed from the building prior to firefighters' arrival and was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with unknown injuries.
Crews put out a fire at the rear of the affected unit and were forced to fortify other portions of the building to prevent further collapse. However, the building has been determined to be uninhabitable.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army responded to the scene to assist the displaced residents, according to the fire department. Utility crews also secured gas, water and electric utilities at the scene.
The cause of the reported explosion is still under investigation.
