CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids police are working to determine what led to a Sunday night shooting that left one man injured and another man dead - the first shooting death in the city in more than nine months.
'It is a very, very active and fluid investigation,” said Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman. 'Multiple investigators are assigned and are working on it.”
Police were called about 8 p.m. Sunday to 29th Avenue and Edgewood Road SW for a report of shots fired.
Responding officers found two men in the Walmart parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds. Authorities said one of the men, Andrew Meeks, 26, of Cedar Rapids, died from injuries sustained in the shooting. A 30-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, remains hospitalized with injuries thought to be non-life threatening.
'I am very concerned that this act occurred within Cedar Rapids and has cost someone their life,” Jerman said.
Meeks' death is the first due to violent crime in the city in 2017 and the first gun-related death since last September.
Ireshia Parks, 13, died last year after she was shot Sept. 27. Authorities said at the time of her death that she was sitting in a car with other teens when a gun somehow discharged and a bullet struck her in the head. A 13-year-old boy was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with her death.
Police said they do not believe there is 'any ongoing threat to the public” related to Sunday's shooting.
