OXFORD - A Cedar Rapids man is accused of stabbing and shooting at another man multiple times Thursday near the Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area.
The suspect, Ronald G. Gonterman, 66, now faces a charge of attempted murder.
According to the a news release and a criminal complaint, the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center took a 911 call around 12:14 p.m. Thursday from a man reporting that he had been stabbed multiple times. The man told dispatchers he did not know where he was, but 911 mapping software placed him in the area north of F.W. Kent Park in Oxford.
The man was located a short time later by deputies in the area of the Babcock Access near the intersection of Swan Lake Road and Greencastle Avenue, which is part of the Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area.
Authorities said the man - who is not identified in the criminal complaint or news release - had been stabbed four times in the back. He was 'bleeding profusely,” according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities said the man identified Gonterman as the one who stabbed him multiple times with a knife and shot at him multiple times with a semi-automatic pistol. Gonterman also tried to run him over with his truck, authorities said.
The criminal complaint does not state what led to the dispute.
'We don't have a reason,” said Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek. 'They were supposedly off chatting.”
A warrant was issued for Gonterman later on Thursday and he was taken into custody at his home by the Cedar Rapids Police Department. Gonterman was taken to the Johnson County Jail.
Attempted murder is a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
