Driver in fatal Mount Vernon crash identified

MOUNT VERNON - Authorities have identified the man killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday near Mount Vernon.
According to the Linn County Sheriff's Office, 75-year-old William Zahn, of Cedar Rapids, was driving west on Mount Vernon Road around 5:51 a.m. Thursday when his 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer entered the ditch. Authorities said the vehicle hit a driveway at 1001 W. Mount Vernon Road, rolled and came to rest in a bean field.
Zahn, the lone occupant of the Trailblazer, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.
Zahn was a longtime independent contractor for Gazette Communications, Inc.
