Firefighters save cat from burning Cedar Rapids home

CEDAR RAPIDS — Firefighters rescued a cat from a burning home Thursday morning.
According to a Cedar Rapids Fire Department news release, crews were called to 1335 Hinkley Ave. NW at 2:20 a.m. Thursday for a report of a kitchen fire. Responding personnel encountered smoke coming from the single-story home when they arrived on the scene.
Firefighters said the occupants of the home said everyone was out and firefighters went in and put out the fire, the fire department said.
A cat was rescued from the basement of the home. It was given oxygen and survived, the fire department said.
The home sustained moderate fire and heavy smoke damage. The American Red Cross responded to assist the occupants.
There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
