IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man was arrested in connection with two robberies.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, around 2 a.m. on Jan. 23, a woman was giving a ride to 29-year-old Daniel J. Crum. Police said Crum told the woman he had a foot or ankle injury.
The woman drove Crum around the same area of West Benton Street 'for an extended period of time,” but Crum never got out, police said. Police said Crum tried to talk the woman into driving him around more, but she refused. Eventually, Crum told the woman he was mugging her and indicated he had a gun.
'You seem like a nice lady, but I'm going to have to take your money,” Crum allegedly said.
When the woman refused to turn over any cash, Crum made references to shooting the woman in the head, police said. The woman told police she never saw a gun, but she believed Crum had one. The woman eventually abandoned her car with Crum, police said.
Crum is alleged to have been involved in a second robbery on Jan. 28. Police said that around 9:13 p.m. that day, Crum robbed a man at an ATM in the 10 block of South Dubuque Street. Crum is accused of grabbing the alleged victim by the wrists and telling him to take out $200 or he would be assaulted.
Police said the victim was unable to withdraw $200 for Crum, who instead got away with $20 from the ATM and $30 from the victim's wallet.
Crum was arrested on Feb. 3 after being developed as a suspect in both robberies, police said. Investigators are now looking into whether Crum may have been part of any other unsolved robberies in the area.
Crum was arrested and now faces two counts of second-degree robbery, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
