May. 29, 2017 9:37 am
IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man is accused of driving drunk in a stolen car.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, around 1:36 a.m. Saturday, police observed a driver later identified as David J. Fox, 24, of Iowa City speeding on Highway 6. A check of the license plate showed the vehicle was listed as stolen.
An officer pulled Fox over in the Wendy's parking lot on First Avenue. At this time, Fox got out of the car and ran. Police said they were able to chase down Fox and take him into custody. Fox and the officers suffered minor injuries during the pursuit, police said.
Fox showed several signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, difficulty balancing and walking and smelled strongly of alcohol, police said. He admitted to drinking downtown prior to being pulled over and told officers he knew the vehicle was stolen and he was trying to get rid of it.
Police said Fox refused breath tests and standard field sobriety tests. He was taken into custody and faces charges of drunken driving - third offense, second-degree theft, driving while barred as a habitual offender, interference with official acts causing bodily injury and public intoxication.
Fox remains in custody at the Johnson County Jail on a $15,000 cash or surety bond.
