CEDAR RAPIDS - Police in Cedar Rapids have made an arrest in the July 2 shooting death of Andrew Meeks Jr.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said Quarzone E. Martin, 25, was arrested in Chicago on Sept. 22 on a material witness warrant by the United States Marshals Service. He was transported to Linn County on Thursday and charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, going armed with intent and willful injury causing serious injury.
Meeks, 26, and Johnny Moore Jr., 30, both were shot on July 2. Police said the two men were in a vehicle when they were hit by gunfire. The vehicle then crashed into a guard rail at the Walmart Supercenter, 3601 29th Ave. SW. Moore was injured, but later discharged.
Buelow said police are continuing to investigate the fatal shooting with the Linn County Attorney's Office.
Martin has only one prior arrest in Iowa, according to online court records. In April 2015, he was charged with conspiracy to commit a non-forcible felony in Linn County. Authorities said Martin conspired with another subject to commit second-degree theft.
Court records show Martin pleaded guilty, was fined and given credit for time served.
If convicted of first-degree murder, Martin would face an automatic life sentence.
