Item ‘similar to an Improvised Explosive Device’ found along Mount Vernon Road

CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids police are investigating after an item 'similar to an Improvised Explosive Device” was found along Mount Vernon Road.

Cedar Rapids spokeswoman Maria Johnson said police responded to 2133 Mount Vernon Road SE at 8:09 a.m. Wednesday after a caller reported seeing an item that looked suspicious.

'The CRPD Hazardous Devices Unit investigated and found an item at the location similar to an Improvised Explosive Device,” Johnson said. She said authorities are not classifying the item as a pipe bomb.

Johnson said the item was removed and the incident remains under investigation. Investigators do not believe this was targeted toward any individual or the property owner, according to Johnson.
