CEDAR RAPIDS - Police have arrested a man who was shot during a burglary last month on 424 Fairway Terrace SE. The incident also left the resident suffering from a gunshot wound.
According to Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow, 43-year-old Sherman Hopkins faces charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery and first-degree kidnapping for the June 21 incident.
Police said they were called to 424 Fairway Terrace SE at 1:28 p.m. June 21 for a report of a shooting. Responding officers were informed that the 26-year-old victim, Ethan P. Deyo, had shot a burglar inside his home. Police found both Deyo and Hopkins at the residence suffering from gunshot wounds.
Deyo allegedly told officers that Hopkins had entered his home armed with a handgun and threatened him. A fight ensued and during the struggle, Deyo got Hopkins' handgun from him and fired it at him several times. Deyo also suffered a gunshot wound during the struggle, police said.
Hopkins was taken to the Linn County Jail on Monday after being released from the hospital.
Buelow said investigators do not believe the incident at Fairway Terrace was a random act. The investigation is active and ongoing, Buelow said.
