Recap: Iowa men's basketball tops No. 19 Michigan in intense rematch
Turning point: This was a game of runs in which each team led for at least 14 minutes and at least seven points. Michigan jumped to a 16-9 lead, but Iowa went on an 18-2 spurt and led 47-43 at halftime. The Wolverines eventually retook the lead with 12:46 left, but the decisive run belonged to Iowa. Down 74-68 with 7:44 left, the Hawkeyes scored the next 10 points to go up four with 4:34 to go and they never trailed again. Luka Garza scored eight of those points, including a 3-pointer and long jumper, then CJ Fredrick's transition 3 gave Iowa the lead.
MVP: It wasn't a 44-point night like Iowa's last game against Michigan for Garza, but he'll take the W. And his line was still excellent. The Iowa big man finished with 33 points on 10-of-18 shooting and 11-of-13 free-throw shooting while pulling down seven rebounds. Michigan threw more double teams at him this time but his patience and tenacity wore down the Wolverines.
Key stat: 27-30. Iowa did a significant amount of work at the free throw line. The Hawkeyes hit 27 of 30, good for 90 percent. Along with Garza's effort, Joe Wieskamp was 9 of 10 and CJ Fredrick a perfect 6-for-6. Michigan, naturally, dealt with foul trouble. Brandon Johns Jr. fouled out and Jon Teske, Franz Wagner and Austin Davis each had four fouls. Point guard Zavier Simpson missed a good chunk of the first half after picking up two quick fouls. The Wolverines only attempted five free throws, hitting four.
