$2 million bond set in Cedar Rapids homicide case

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Marion man accused of killing AnnaElise Edgeton earlier this year will remain in custody on a $2 million cash or surety bond.

Kyler J. Junkins, 19, appeared briefly via video for an initial appearance Friday morning. He appeared with an attorney, but did not speak.

Junkins faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree burglary in the shooting death of Edgeton, 18, on Jan. 13. Junkins was already in custody in the Linn County Jail on unrelated charges when he was arrested on Thursday.

Cedar Rapids police said Edgeton's body was found Jan. 13 at the Shamrock Apartments, 316 Jacolyn Drive. She had been shot to death, police said.

Edgeton was a 2015 graduate of Metro High School and a certified nursing assistant, according to her obituary. She married John Edgeton in August 2017.

'Anna was determined, outspoken, kind-hearted, mature and responsible beyond her years,” her obituary states. 'She was bright, driven, spunky and independent.”

Police at this time have declined to answer any questions about the homicide, including whether Edgeton and Junkins knew each other or the motive for the crime. However, Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said Thursday that police do not believe the killing was a random act.

First-degree murder is a Class A felony punishable by an automatic life sentence.
