Muscatine man accused of stealing $20,000 from his fraternity

IOWA CITY - The former treasurer for a University of Iowa fraternity is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from the student organization.

According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, from Aug. 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017, 25-year-old Drew W. Rominger, of Muscatine, served as treasurer for the Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity. Authorities said during that time period, Rominger made roughly 73 'suspicious” cash withdrawals from the fraternity's bank account totaling $20,839.33.

Rominger allegedly told police the cash withdrawals were to pay the fraternity's utility bills. Police said that records for those bills show multiple late fees or instances when the bills weren't paid at all.

Police said Rominger's fraternity-issued debit card is associated with the suspicious ATM withdrawals and his named is signed to all of the suspicious check withdrawals. He has been arrested and faces one county of first-degree theft, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
