WAUKON - A Waukon man is accused of shooting and killing his stepfather on Monday.
According to the Allamakee County Attorney's Office, around 3:20 p.m. April 16, the Allamakee County Dispatch Center took a 911 call from 32-year-old John Quanrude requesting help for an accidental shooting. Waukon police responded to Quanrude's residence at 49 Jean Road in the Parkview Trailer Court, authorities said.
Police met Quanrude outside of the home and he brought them inside where police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest lying face down on the floor. Quanrude allegedly told police that he had fired a warning shot at the victim - Dean E. Russell, 60, of 49 Jean Road - and then fired a second shot which hit Russell in the chest. Russell is Quanrude's stepfather and roommate, authorities said.
Russell was taken to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, but died shortly after his arrival. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.
Quanrude was arrested and faces one count of second-degree murder, a Class B felony punishable by up to 50 years in prison. He remains in custody on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
