One dead after officer-involved shooting in northern Iowa

FLOYD COUNTY — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead Wednesday night.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, at 8:31 p.m., the Floyd County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call concerning a man pointing a gun to his head sitting inside a vehicle at the Love's Truck Stop in Floyd. Authorities said the man fled south on Highway 218 before officers could respond.

At 8:49 p.m., a Nashua police officer stopped a vehicle after observing it going 104 mph on Highway 218, authorities said. The driver got out of the vehicle and pointed a handgun at his head.

Authorities said officers from the Bremer and Chickasaw County sheriff's offices, Nashua Police Department and Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene. Officials on the scene negotiated with the driver for about 40 minutes before he fired a shot inside the vehicle.

As officers approached the vehicle, they discovered the driver was not hurt, authorities said. However, he resisted officers' attempts to take him into custody and struck an officer with his vehicle. Two officers fired and fatally struck the driver, authorities said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the DCI.
