Four animals die in Cedar Rapids mobile home fire

May. 14, 2014 3:22 pm
A midday mobile home fire claimed the lives of four animals on Wednesday.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to 2925 Johnson Ave. NW, Lot 40, at 11:33 a.m. after a neighbor noticed smoking coming from the residence. Responding crews encountered a fully-involved fire near the rear third of the home and heavy smoke throughout the residence.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. One dog and three cats died in the place, according to the fire department.
The neighbor who called in the fire told firefighters he tried to enter the home to rescue the animals, but the smoke and fire prevented him from doing so.
The occupants were at school and work during the blaze. No other injuries were reported. Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced family.
