Man who posted YouTube video of Iowa City arrest arrested again

Mar. 16, 2015 10:58 am
IOWA CITY - A University of Iowa student who posted a video of his September 2014 public intoxication arrest to YouTube has been arrested again.
According to an Iowa City Police Department criminal complaint, around 1:40 a.m. Friday, officers observed 27-year-old Grayson Scogin walking into traffic at the intersection of Burlington and Clinton streets 'displaying his two middle fingers toward (officers).”
Police said when they tried to make contact with Scogin, he turned and jogged away from the officers. Scogin attempted to evade the officers through the Clinton Street parking ramp, police said.
When he realized he couldn't get out of the ramp, Scogin laid down on the cement and yelled in a 'loud, disturbing manner,” police said. Police said Scogin smelled strongly of alcohol and had other signs of intoxication. Officers said he acted in an 'aggressive manner,” tensed up his muscles and had to be escorted to a squad car. He refused a breath test.
Scogin was arrested on Sept. 12, 2014 by the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety when an officer stopped to talk to him after he allegedly nearly walked in front of a car. A dash camera video recording of the incident posted to YouTube by Scogin shows him walking as an officer asks him to stop. The incident escalates when the officer tells Scogin not to put his hands in his pockets. Seconds later, both men are on the ground.
Scogin commented in the online video, which has been viewed more than 60,000 times, that he 'clearly wasn't resisting.”
According to online court records, Scogin's bench trial on his September arrest has been scheduled for April 29.
For his Friday night arrest, Scogin was initially charged with second-offense public intoxication. However, according to court records, only a first-offense public intoxication charge was filed. His trial for that offense has been scheduled for April 28.
