CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man is accused of tricking his own grandmother into sending him more than $10,000 over seven months, which he allegedly used to purchase drugs.
According to a Linn County Attorney's Office criminal complaint, between January and July 2014, 30-year-old Derin J. Vaverka called his grandmother numerous times. On those occasions, Vaverka allegedly masked his voice with an accent and convinced his grandmother to send him checks.
The amount of those checks totaled more than $10,000, which Vaverka used to purchase drugs, according to the Linn County Attorney's Office.
Vaverka has been charged with first-degree theft, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
