Jan. 7, 2015 2:06 pm
IOWA CITY - The man arrested at an Iowa City apartment complex last week on a murder warrant is accused of shooting two people.
According to the Chicago Police Department, which issued the murder warrant, 29-year-old Lorenzo Jones is accused of shooting two people at a Chicago home on Christmas Day. Police described the incident as a 'domestic-related” incident, but said they didn't have information on how Jones was related to the victims, one of which died at the hospital.
According to Chicago Police officer Janel Sedevic, officers were called to the 1900 block of Trumbull Avenue at 6:05 p.m. December 25 for two people who were shot at the residence. One victim, a 52-year-old man, suffered gunshot wounds to his torso and leg and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sedevic said.
The second victim, a 42-year-old man, was shot in the leg. Sedevic said he was listed as being in stable condition when he took himself to Mount Sinai.
Jones left the scene before he could be taken into custody.
'He was said to have fled the scene in a blue vehicle,” Sedevic said.
Jones, who has ties to both Iowa City and Chicago, was arrested at an apartment complex at 810 Benton Drive in Iowa City on Dec. 29. Iowa City Police Sgt. Scott Gaarde said the department worked with Chicago authorities to determine Jones was in a unit in the 810 building. The department's special response and crisis negotiation teams responded to the scene and negotiators were able to get Jones on the phone. He gave himself up peacefully to police.
At the time, police had information Jones might have been armed with an assault rifle and had made threats against other people. Gaarde said he does not know if any weapon was ever recovered.
According to online court records, Jones has waived extradition back to Illinois, clearing the way to him to return to Chicago and face charges there.
Jones has several convictions in Johnson County, including ones for willful injury, drunken driving and escape from custody. Earlier in December 2014, he pleaded guilty to domestic abuse, possession of a controlled substance and assault causing bodily injury. He was sentenced to 35 days in jail but also given credit for his 35 days previously served, according to online court records.
