Iowa City West freshman Ainsley Wilson has shot some low scores.
She posted her lowest Monday.
Wilson fired 3-under 66 to claim medalist honors for the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division girls’ golf meet at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Dubuque. Cedar Rapids Xavier shot 309 to win the team title, topping Western Dubuque by 11.
“I think I played a good back nine,” Wilson said. “I didn’t shoot well on the front (but) it was one of my better rounds.”
Wilson has some high standards. She shot even par on the front night, carding two birdies and two bogeys. After the turn, she posted three birdies and six pars for 3-under 31. Wilson closed with back-to-back birdies.
“I was able to finish strong,” Wilson said. “That helped a lot.”
Wilson has been a very steady player from her very first meet. She was able to stockpile pars and is unfazed with any challenge, including come tough greens and pin placements.
“She stays so even-keel,” West Coach Mary Goodfellow said. “She is just very consistent.
“The greens were tricky. She putted well. She hit a lot of greens (in regulation).”
Wilson topped Linn-Mar senior Morgan Rupp by four strokes. Rupp, a two-time MVC divisional Player of the Year, leads Wilson by one stroke, heading into the third and final round MVC divisional play, which determines conference team titles and individual all-conference honors.
“That would be cool,” said Wilson, who helped the Trojans to third with 333, “but I just want to play the best I can the rest of the season for my team.”
The Saints increased their lead over the Bobcats, who were just one back after the MVC Super Meet. Hayley Morris finished third and led Xavier with a 71. Teammate Mehar Julka was fourth at 72. Evelyn Bern and Carmen Hartgrave added 80 and 86, respectively, for the Saints.
C.R. WASHINGTON, PETERSEN PLACE 2ND AT MVC VALLEY
Cedar Rapids Washington shot 332, including even-par 72 from senior Jane Petersen, and finished second in both the team and individual competitions at the MVC Valley Division meet Monday at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City.
Cedar Falls won the team race with 326 and the Tigers’ Molly Ratchford was the medalist with 2-under 70.
In addition to Petersen, Lily Bell Barker shot 79, Shay Munson had 82, Kate Newlin and Addy Brown came in at 99. The Warriors and Tigers were tied to start the divisional but Cedar Falls now owns a six-shot lead.
Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Kylie Wachtl leads the individual race, going into the final round. She shot 74 on Monday and sits at 148. She leads Petersen and Ratchford by one stroke.
The final rounds are scheduled for May 19. The MVC Mississippi will be at Thunder Hills Country Club in Peosta. The MVC Valley will be at Bunker Hill.
