Here’s how all 70 Iowa high school football teams ranked in this week’s Gazette poll fared in Week 8 games Friday night.
The top-ranked teams in both Class 5A and 4A went down against unranked opponents.
Ankeny (coincidentally the preseason No. 1) topped West Des Moines Valley, 13-10. Other contenders for the No. 1 spot faced upset bids of their own: West Des Moines Dowling and Bettendorf both won by a point, while Pleasant Valley was knocked off, 49-35, by Iowa City West.
Bettendorf, which rallied to beat Cedar Rapids Prairie, 48-47 in overtime, remains 5A’s only undefeated team.
Lewis Central’s hopes of a wire-to-wire run as the No. 1 team in 4A were dashed by Norwalk, 21-7. Pella, North Polk and Decorah are the last unbeatens in that class.
