DES MOINES — It’s not “Ty.”
It’s “T.Y.”
T.Y., as in Tabastein Young. T.Y., as in champion.
“That was my grandpa’s name,” Cedar Rapids Prairie junior T.Y. Pour said after winning the Class 4A boys’ long jump championship at the state track and field meet Friday afternoon at Drake Stadium. “Not many people call me Tabastein. My older brother does. My teammates do sometimes when they’re joking around.”
Pour’s first jump Friday was no joke. He leaped 23 feet, 4 1/2 inches, a career-best. It held up, easily.
“Other meets lately, I haven’t been as relaxed,” Pour said. “Today, I gave it to God and focused on relaxing.
“I’m so blessed. Our support staff, my coaches, the whole team ... I gave it all for them on the runway.”
Iowa City West’s Aidan Jacobsen was second to Pour in the long jump (22-11 3/4), then went out shortly thereafter and won the 400-meter hurdles in 52.85 seconds.
“I wasn’t happy with my time, but 10 points is 10 points,” said Jacobsen, an Iowa State recruit. “I didn’t feel amazing coming out of the long jump. I refueled, reset, refocused. It is what it is, I’ve got to do what I can for the team.
“I’ve won a Drake Relays flag. I’ve won relay titles. But the individual stuff, this is my first one, and it feels great.”
West resides in fourth place in the 4A boys’ team standings with 36 points. Ankeny and West Des Moines Dowling share the lead with 53 points; Cedar Falls is third with 37.
The final nine events are Saturday.
Linn-Mar’s Sam Watts established a career-best in the shot put on the final throw of her career — 59 feet, 0 1/4 inches. It was a quarter-inch short of Dowling’s Nathan Rotherham.
“I’m a little upset, but I’m happy too,” Watts said. “It was a great way to end my career.
“It’s frustrating, a quarter-inch. I put my life into it, and it comes down to a quarter-inch.”
Jacob Smetzer of Cedar Rapids Kennedy was third in the long jump; West was third in the 800-meter relay.
