There are three classifications in Iowa high school girls’ soccer in 2024, meaning a total of 24 state tournament qualifiers.
Regional semifinals are Tuesday in all three classes and the finals are Thursday.
Regional winners advance to the state tournament at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines on May 28.
Here’s a breakdown of the brackets with a look at how Gazette-area teams are set up:
Class 3A
Region 6: On paper, the most likely scenario here is that top-seeded and fourth-ranked Linn-Mar (14-3) faces No. 13 Iowa City West (10-4) in the final. However, the Lions will have to clear the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal between Cedar Rapids Prairie (5-8) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (4-9), and the Trojans will need to beat No. 14 Cedar Falls (10-5) to make that happen.
Region 7: A tough draw for Cedar Rapids Jefferson (5-11) here. If the J-Hawks get past Waterloo West (3-13) Friday, they’ll face No. 3 Ankeny Centennial (11-6) next. Southeast Polk (10-6) and Indianola (7-10) are on the other side.
Region 8: No. 9 Iowa City High (11-3) will put its impressive season to the test. The Little Hawks face Davenport North (8-6) in a semifinal. With a win, City High’s likely regional final opponent would be No. 7 Bettendorf (13-3).
Class 2A
Region 6: No. 7 Cedar Rapids Xavier (7-4) is the top seed with No. 11 Clear Creek Amana (10-5) the 2. The Saints will face the victor of Mount Vernon (9-7) and Oskaloosa (3-10), while the Clippers get Marion (8-6) or South Tama (1-13).
Region 7: Eighth-ranked Independence (10-4) is the top dog here. The Mustangs will get the winner of Bellueve (4-8) and Clinton (2-9) in the semis. On the other side of the bracket are North Scott (8-8-1) and DeWitt Central (6-9).
Region 8: Will No. 6 Iowa City Liberty (11-4) reach the state tournament for the first time in program history? As the 1-seed, the Lightning will certainly have a fair shot at it. Their toughest competition is likely to be No. 15 Burlington (13-2) or Fort Madison (10-3).
Class 1A
Region 1: No. 1 Davenport Assumption (13-1) is the team to beat. The Knights blanked West Branch (5-10), 6-0, on Wednesday and will face Central Lee (6-4) next. On the other side of the bracket, No. 13 Dyersville Beckman (12-2) will take on Tipton (9-5).
Region 7: Fourth-ranked Denver (16-1) is the top seed here and will face Union Community (7-11) in the semis. Vinton-Shellsburg (11-3), a team that’s been in and out of the rankings this season, is the 2-seed. The Vikings will need to beat Dubuque Wahlert (6-6) to reach the finals.
Region 8: No. 8 Center Point-Urbana (11-1) is the 1. It won’t be an easy path to state for the Stormin’ Pointers. They’ll face Solon (8-7) in the semis, a team that took them to PK’s earlier this season. A win over the Spartans would land them a matchup between the winner of Anamosa (10-3) and No. 9 Hudson (14-2).
