Find these treasures along the beach

These are some treasures you might find if you are combing the beach.

Sand dollars

You might find a white, round shape about the size of your palm with a star on it. This is the dried exoskeleton of a sand dollar - an invertebrate that lived along the seafloor, according to Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Kelp

Long strands of kelp grow in shallow ocean waters, creating an underwater forest where fish and other marine mammals live, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Sometimes long, brown ribbons wash up on shore.

Seaglass

Genuine sea glass is made when pieces of glass, from ships maybe, or just trash, are battered by waves and slowly made smooth. According to USA Today, it often has a frosted appearance, and it can be found in many colors.

Shells

The pretty seashells scattered along the sand are actually discarded exoskeletons of snails, clams, oysters and other mollusks, according to Scientific American magazine. If you press a conch shell to your ear, the spiral shape recreates the sound of the ocean.
