CEDAR RAPIDS — The victim of an ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 moment Friday night. One heck of a response to that Saturday afternoon.
West Des Moines Valley dominated the fourth quarter and beat Linn-Mar, 54-42, in one of the marquee games of the inaugural seven-game MVC-CIML Shootout at Alliant Energy PowerHouse.
Last year’s Class 4A state champions lost to Waukee by a point in double-overtime Friday night on a shot at the buzzer that came a few steps beyond half court. Valley came in ranked second, Linn-Mar fourth.
Seventh-ranked Waukee lost to No. 1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 65-54, in the event’s finale.
“After last night,” Valley Coach B.J. Windhorst said. “A lot of lost sleep. So it was good to come over and win ... We needed it.”
A needed win that came without its best player to boot. Junior guard Curtis Stinson Jr. didn’t play because of a leg injury, Windhorst said.
Stinson is Valley’s leading scorer and rebounder.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been through anything like (Friday night) in 25 years of coaching,” Windhorst said. “For them to come back and find a way to get a win against a quality team today, without one of our best players, says a lot about their toughness.”
Windhorst did get back guard Zay Robinson, another all-state caliber guy, Friday night after missing the entire football season and the first seven games with a shoulder injury. He was a difference maker here, scoring 17 points and leading the fourth-quarter surge.
Linn-Mar (6-3) led by a point, 32-31, after three quarters but scored the first seven points of the fourth and never looked back. After Linn-Mar closed within 38-36, Robinson drove and dished to center Trevin Jirak for a three-point play, then had a driving hoop a bit later to make it a 46-38 game with 2:40 to go.
Valley (7-2) outscored Linn-Mar in the final frame, 23-10.
“We knew we were a way better defensive team than we were in the third,” Robinson said. “We just picked it up, picked it up, started getting more stops and then got to the free-throw line. Just pacing ourselves, because we were playing too fast. The fourth quarter we started slowing down and let the game come to us instead of rushing it.”
Davis Kern led Linn-Mar with 17 points, though he was the only Lion in double figures. Linn-Mar also lost a very tough one Friday night, in overtime at sixth-ranked Cedar Falls.
That was the second OT defeat this season for a club that has played a very difficult schedule so far.
“I just didn’t think we played well at all,” said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson. “Offensively we were stagnant. It wasn’t like we didn’t do some good things, but I just thought our energy level wasn’t very good.
“I told our guys that I really believe that we belong. I don’t know if they believe it. But we have been right in the mix with everybody. After Tuesday when we play Kennedy, we will have played seven ranked teams in our first 10 games.”
The Shootout didn’t strictly involve schools from the Mississippi Valley Conference and Central Iowa Metro League. Schools from the Misssippi Athletic Conference and Alliance Conference also participated.
Counting a matchup of West Des Moines Dowling of the CIML and Iowa City West of the MVC at Iowa City, conference standings for the day looked like this: CIML 4-2, MAC 2-1, MVC 2-4 and Iowa Alliance 0-1.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy 65, Waukee 54
Cyrus Courtney scored a game-high 22 points as the Cougars rolled.
Trey McKowen added 15 points for Kennedy (8-0), which led at halftime, 30-19, and blew out to a 20-plus point lead in the second half. Trevan Krumrei (14 points) and Micah Schlaak (10) made it four double-digit scorers for Kennedy.
“I thought we played great until the last four minutes,” Kennedy Coach Jon McKowen said. “We tried to slow it down a little bit. But that’s something that we have to work on, something that we have to get better at.”
Mason Costello, whose aforementioned two-thirds court shot beat Valley, led Waukee with 16 points.
Southeast Polk 70, Cedar Rapids Prairie 57
Southeast Polk played Friday night, had to travel two hours for a 10 a.m. game, and it looked like it early, as Cedar Rapids Prairie got out to a 7-0 lead. But it was all Rams after that.
SEP (4-7) built a 48-23 halftime lead and went from there. Guard Bode Goodman scored a game-high 34 points, 23 of which came in the first half.
Reid Burkle had a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds for Prairie (3-6), which did whittle away its huge deficit to as few as nine in the fourth quarter.
Waukee Northwest 74, Iowa City Liberty 36
Not much drama here, as Northwest (5-6) built a 39-9 lead in the second quarter.
Guards Andrew Cose and Maverick Inman scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the Wolves, who led 61-28 after three quarters. Forward Grant Tigges added 11 points.
Iowa City Liberty (3-5) turned it over a ton in the first half and shot just 30 percent from the field in the game. Trey Hughes led the Lightning with 13 points.
Pleasant Valley 45, Ames 29
You knew this one would not be high scoring. The teams played last season in an event at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, with Ames winning 33-31.
Pleasant Valley (6-3) led most of the way here and pulled away late. Max Muszalski had 13 points and Caden Rubel 12 to lead the Spartans.
Jamison Poe’s seven points led Ames (5-3).
Ankeny 78, Bettendorf 53
The Class 4A ninth-ranked Hawks shot over 60 percent from the field in this impressive win.
Senior guard Carter Johnson scored a game-high 29 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field for Ankeny (8-2). He came in averaging 24.9 and shooting over 50 percent from beyond the 3-point line.
Senior forward Caden Wilkins led Bettendorf (5-5) with 28 points.
Davenport Assumption 72, Cedar Falls 66
Class 3A’s ninth-ranked team led virtually the entire game in an upset of the 4A No. 6 Tigers. The Knights led by 18 points after three quarters.
Sophomore Navon Shabazz had 25 points for Assumption (7-3), with Kayvion Hodges adding 19. Anthony Galvin had 23 points for Cedar Falls (6-2).
